OC day two

Posted by zdravkos on 01 Aug 2009 | Tagged as: Tech

As I said I shall have any news about ATI Radeon HD 4770, I wouldn’t knew I will have to play with two of those. That’s right, I have setup two 4770 in cross-fire mode, but that’s not all of it – as a bonus a brand new AMD Phenom X2 II 550 BE is under the hood, bringing a huge increase of speed and cache compared to AMD 7750 BE (from 2MB to 6 MB L3 cache).
Check out the screenshot above. You can click on image to expand it. All is done on air-cooling. The CPU is OC from 3100 to 3511 MHz (+13.2%) without raising the voltage! And 4770 OC is quite limited by Catalyst Control Center from 750/800 to 800/850 MHz (+6%) which is nothing at all. The real potential of those cards is like 850/1100 MHz. To be continued…

Google Translate in action

I just posted a comment in Picasa Web Albums in Bulgarian, and it was automatically translated in English. Good work, Google!

ATI Stream – Finally, CUDA Has Competition!

Posted by zdravkos on 15 Jun 2009 | Tagged as: Tech

So is CUDA doing anything? You bet. There’s a 35% drop in output time with GPU acceleration enabled, so CUDA is plainly throwing everything it can at the job. But here’s the interesting part: AMD and Nvidia show essentially the same encode time in CPU-only mode, but Stream yields a 108% performance gain, easily trouncing the CUDA result while averaging 40% less CPU utilization than CUDA (read more).

OC game day

Posted by zdravkos on 17 May 2009 | Tagged as: Cool

I woke up, feeling like some Overclocking should be done today, so I fired my rig’s Power button and started few tools to help me out. The result is my AMD cpu OC from 2700 to 3200 MHz (+18.5%), and my ATI 3870 video card OC from 775/1125 to 837/1215 MHz (+8%). The latest could seems to be not a big deal, but it really helps gaming, I am sure.
Check out the screenshot above. You can click on image to expand it. Now, the Crysis64.exe is calling me…

Edit: Note that CPU OC is using stock voltage of 1.25V. By increasing it to 1.45V you can easily reach 3400 MHz. Quite impressive on air cooling. As for ATI 3870 OC, expect some interesting news next week when I will do ATI 4770 Crossfire testing, so until then.

Double Driver – backup and restore installed drivers

I came across a very nice tool which could be quite handy when you upgrade your PC. Check it out:

Double Driver is a very simple and useful tool which not only allows you to view all the drivers installed on your system but also allows you to backup, restore, save and print all chosen drivers simply and reliably.

Testing Mac OS X

Posted by zdravkos on 07 Jan 2009 | Tagged as: Cool

Hi there! I just completed my Intel rig and loaded it with Mac OS 10.5.5 without any issues. Now, that is a GUI (Graphical User Interface) and that’s how it should be done. Also I can tell you it starts in 10 seconds, and shuts-down in 5! Compare that with Windows Vista and you’ll definitely see the difference! I love BSD, so I’m going back to Mac OS exploration…

Optimizing Windows Vista

Posted by zdravkos on 07 Nov 2008 | Tagged as: General

Finally I decided to move from Windows XP SP3 to Windows Vista 64-bit, mostly due to fact that I’ve got 8GB of memory, and XP only sees 3.2 of them! Now, I had to chose 64-bit Vista to achieve this, which leaded me to another pitfall which I shall discuss another time.

What I’m speaking now is that I immediately noticed one major difference in OS behaviour – Vista is using my hard disk drive almost all the time. I assume its doing some indexing or defragmenting, or some optimization, but it’s really annoying! I had to stop it.

Here are the Windows services which I stoped and put in Manual startup mode:

  • Windows Defender*
  • Tablet PC Input Service
  • Superfetch
  • ReadyBoost
  • Application Experience

After doing that my Vista installation behaves as a regular XP one – my hard disk stays cool and quite. A side note: I have disabled Windows Defender from its Options settings before stopping it, and I’m doing so because I have better antivirus and anti-spyware solution installed.

Hello, Microblogging

Posted by zdravkos on 08 Jul 2008 | Tagged as: General

I’ve had an account at Pownce, but really none of my friends were there, the site seams to be complicated with lots of things to set up etc, so finally I came across this post, explaining exactly what I was thinking. I went to Identi.ca web site and I saw I could register by just using my OpenID. Wow, done in 60 seconds! Nice site, nice interface, simple to use. In next minute my Pownce profile was deleted. Hello, Identi.ca – hello, microblogging!
